Description

A pair of cottages located on Victoria Pathway, dating from 1852. They were likely designed by James Harrison. The cottages are built of Flemish bond brick with a grey slate roof. The design features two front-gabled bays flanked by porch bays. A plinth supports the buildings, and a stone step leads to a five-panel door with a blocked fanlight. Each cottage has a canted bay window with painted stone sills and 3;6;3-pane sashes. A blocked window is present on the flank of the main bay. The first floor has a 16-pane sash in each front bedroom. Decorative bargeboards are present, and there are two plinthed chimneys on the shared party wall. The ends of the cottages each feature three 12-pane sashes to each floor; all sashes have painted stone sills and gauged-brick flat arches. Rear extensions exist, along with 16-pane sashes. The interiors were not inspected. Together with numbers 2-18, 3 & 5, and 11-17 Victoria Pathway, these cottages represent a unique mid-19th century suburban planning example, comparable to mid-20th century Radburn layouts due to the shared footpath at the front and vehicular access at the rear.
