Description

A pair of cottages dating from around 1855, likely designed by James Harrison and possibly built for the second Marquis of Westminster. The cottages are constructed of Flemish bond brown brick with steep grey slate roofs. They are two storeys high, with two bays plus a recessed porch bay on each end, and have undergone some alterations. Each cottage has a plinth. The front doors are four-panelled and now part-glazed, with fanlights set within round brick arches. Canted bay windows with flush sashes of 4, 8, and 4 panes are present, along with painted stone sills, a frieze, a cornice, and hipped slate roofs with lead rolls. One bay window has had its glazing bars removed. A contemporary glazed porch has a door of 4 panes above 1 panel, 6-pane sidelights, glazed side panels and a glazed roof. The first floor has a recessed 16-pane sash to No.14 and a horned sash without glazing bars to No.12. Exposed purlins, bargeboards, finials, and central ridge chimneys are also visible. The left side of No.14 features recessed 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills and gauged brick flat arches, three to the ground floor and two to the first floor. The right side is similar, but without glazing bars to either the ground or first floor, with a 12-pane recessed attic sash. The rear of the cottages has walled yards, with a recessed sash (bars removed) to No.12 and a 20-pane sash to No.14. The interiors have not been inspected. These cottages, along with numbers 2-10, 16 & 18 and 3-17 Victoria Pathway, form an unusual example of mid-19th century town planning, reminiscent of mid-20th century Radburn layouts, with a footpath serving the fronts of the cottages and vehicular streets at the rear.
