Description

A pair of cottages dating to circa 1855, likely designed by James Harrison, possibly for the second Marquis of Westminster. They are constructed of Flemish bond brown brick with steep grey slate roofs. The cottages consist of two front-gabled bays, flanked by recessed porch bays. They have a stone plinth, and the front door features four fielded panels with a fanlight, set within a round brick arch. The windows have stone sills, mostly painted, and gauged brick flat arches; the sashes are recessed. One window has 12 panes, while two canted bay windows each feature 4, 8, and 4-pane sashes, all under a fascia with eaves cornices and a hipped slate roof with lead rolls. Some windows have been replaced. There's a door with four fielded panels and a fanlight, sheltered by a lean-to porch on brackets, and a central plinthed chimney stack with three old pots. The left end of number 18 has a rendered gable and 12-pane sashes. The right end of number 16 has two 12-pane sashes and a smaller replaced window to the ground floor, with two 12-pane sashes flanking a blank sash panel to the first floor. The interiors have not been inspected. Together with Nos 2-14 and 3-17 Victoria Pathway, these cottages demonstrate an unusual example of mid-19th century suburban planning, comparable to mid-20th century Radburn layouts, with a footpath serving the fronts of the cottages and vehicular access at the rear.
