Description

Detached suburban house, built in 1852. It is constructed of Flemish bond brown brick with steep gabled grey slate roofs and is in a Tudor Revival style. The exterior has two storeys plus attics and three windows, with the left bay projecting and featuring a front gable. There are three steps leading to the front door, which consists of two tall panels within a stone case with a segmental arch over a one-pane overlight. A gabled brick porch features stone flush quoins and coping. To the left is a recessed 12-pane sash within a stone case with a hipped stone roof. Three stone steps lead to a canted bay window to the right, featuring a pair of French windows with three-pane sidelights and a margin-paned overlight, with an iron railing to a balcony above. The right face of the porch has two Tudor-arched lights. Painted stone sills and gauged brick arches feature above the three recessed 12-pane sashes to the first floor. A recessed 12-pane sash is located in the gable of the left bay, and another is found within a gabled dormer, right. Square-arris quoins are present on the corners, along with stone kneelers, copings, and finials to the gables. The sides of the house are similarly finished to the front. The interior retains many original features, including an open-well, open-string staircase, four-panel doors, some fireplaces, and ceiling cornices. The building was part of a planned development that included cottages in Victoria Pathway, to its rear. The Manor House and the first two blocks of cottages are shown on John M'Gahey's pictorial plan of Chester, published circa 1855.
