Description

A pair of suburban houses dating from the 1850s, likely designed by James Harrison and similar in design to numbers 4 and 6 St John's Road. The houses are constructed of orange-brown brick with grey slate roofs. They are arranged over two storeys, with projecting bays on each side of a pair of central bays, and a small, recessed, two-storey porch bay at each end. The architectural style is not readily identifiable. Both porches have been altered, obscuring original detailing. Each end-bay features a mullioned square six-light bay window with a painted stone sill, plinthed corner posts, and a transom forming a St Andrew’s Cross in each light. The central bays each have three lancets with three-pane sashes. The hipped roofs over the bay windows are covered with fish-scale slates and have lead rolls. The first floor incorporates two triangular-arched casements to each house, featuring tracery in the form of king post trusses. Each outer bay has a front gable, and there is a dormer gable above each inner casement. The ridge has three chimneys with separated flues. Behind each porch, at ground floor level, are two two-pane lancets; the first floor has a Y-tracery window. Interiors were not inspected, and details are available from the description of number 6 St John’s Road.
