Description
The tomb of John Wedgwood, who lived from 1788 to 1869, and his wife Hannah, who lived from 1814 to 1891, is located in the churchyard of Brown Knowl Methodist Church. This tomb, dating from around 1869, features a square, battered pier with a tall, moulded plinth made of white stone, standing on a base of rusticated sandstone with cast iron cresting. The pier is inscribed with the words: "In affectionate remembrance of the late Venerable John Wedgwood who departed this life March 20th 1869 aged 81 years. Also of Hannah, wife of the above who died at Crewe November 15th 1891 aged 77 years." John Wedgwood was a distant relative of Josiah Wedgwood and was a key supporter of Bourne and Clowes, the founders of the Primitive Methodist sect in South Cheshire. He was a powerful and well-loved preacher who played a significant role in establishing Primitive Methodism in the region since its inception in 1819. He chose to be buried at Brown Knowl, a place with a strong Primitive Methodist community.
