Description
Bankhead is a house built in 1864 by Alfred Waterhouse as a dower house for the Bolesworth Estate. It is constructed of red brick in header bond with red sandstone dressings, and features a roof made of banded shaped tiles with hipped gables and pierced bargeboards. The roof is topped with ridge chimneys that have octagonal flues. The building has an irregular plan, originally consisting of three bays, which has been extended by two bays to the right in an identical style.
The windows display an irregular pattern of one, two, and three lights, with shouldered splays to the jambs and mullions, and contain recessed sashes without bars. The staircase and porch windows have lattice leads. The gabled porch features shaped double doors made of oak set in an arched opening, along with ornate boot-scrapers. To the right of the porch, there is a square bay window that supports a smaller canted bay window above in the bedroom. The exterior includes stone bands and ornate circular windows in the two main gables.
Inside, there is a broad dogleg stair with shaped newels and well-crafted turned balusters. The interior also features substantial four-panel doors in heavy casings, with all joinery made of pine. The overall massing and detailing of the house is relatively plain and direct for Waterhouse's style.
