GV II

House, 1864, by Alfred Waterhouse, built as a dower house for the Bolesworth Estate. Red brick in header bond with red sandstone dressings; roof of banded shaped tiles with hipped gables and pierced bargeboards carries ridge chimneys with octagonal flues. An irregular plan, originally of 3 bays extended (in identical style) 2 bays to right. An irregular pattern of 1, 2 and 3 light windows with shouldered splays to jambs and mullions, contains recessed sashes without bars; staircase and porch windows have lattice leads. Gabled porch contains shaped double doors of oak in arched opening; ornate boot-scrapers. A square bay window right of porch supports smaller canted bay to bedroom above. Stone bands. Ornate circular windows in the 2 main gables. Interior: Broad dogleg stair with shaped newels and good turned balusters. Substantial 4-panel doors in heavy casings. All joinery is of pine. The massing and detailing is, for Waterhouse, plain and direct.
