Description
The building known as the Workshop, formerly a barn and shippon, at Barnhill Grange dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of creamwashed brown brick and features a grey slate roof. The structure is rectangular and two storeys high.
The threshing barn section on the left has a slightly projecting gabled porch with a round-arched recess that contains an opening measuring 3 metres wide by 4 metres high, which leads to a rectangular loading door for the granary above. On either side of the porch, there are two narrower round-arched recesses, each two storeys high, featuring honeycomb brickwork for ventilation. The left end of the barn has three similar recesses, with the central one being wider and a pattern of vents located in the gable above.
The former shippon, located on the lower storey to the right, has boarded doors in two doorways, a boarded window opening, and five ornamental I-shaped vents. A plain projecting band runs at the first-floor level, which includes two loading doors, four boarded oblong pitch-holes, four diamond-shaped vents, and eight loophole vents. There are also brick landing platforms at the right end, which suggest the presence of a former pigeon-loft. Inside, the building features queen-strut trusses made of softwood.
