Description
The Bankhead Stable and Coach House Building, along with its yard wall, is a detached structure built in 1864 by Alfred Waterhouse for the Bolesworth Estate. It is constructed of red brick in header bond and features a roof made of banded shaped tiles. The building is L-shaped, consisting of one storey with lofts in the roof, and has hipped gables along with a hipped dormer in the corner. There are two chimneys, each with a single square flue, and a weathercock at the right end, along with a clock in the right gable. The right wing contains two arched carriage doorways, while other doorways have shouldered lintels; one in the left wing is located under an open porch with a pentice roof supported by shaped timber brackets. The building also features small-pane hopper windows made of wood. In front of the stables, there is a sandstone retaining wall. The strong horizontal massing of this building complements the vertical expression of the adjacent house.
