Description
The Stone Parlour in the grounds of Broxton Old Hall is a chamber dating from the early 19th century or earlier, carved into a sandstone cliff. It measures approximately 6 metres square and stands 4 metres high. The rock walls are partly lined with tooled squared blocks of sandstone, some of which have fallen. The floor is made of stone flags, and the ceiling slopes gently to a central ridge.
There is a Tudor-arched opening with deep splayed embrasures that was designed for a former large window, featuring a weathered cill-stone. To the right of this window opening, a basket-arched opening has peg-holes indicating where a former door-frame was located. Additionally, to the right of the entrance passage, another basket-arched opening leads to a shallow, partly natural cave that has a small natural opening in the right corner. This grotto, measuring 20 feet square, was cut out of solid rock and was previously frequented by the Egerton family, as noted in Bagshaw's Cheshire Directory from 1850.
