Description

The gates and gate piers to the old (north) part of Overleigh Cemetery were built between 1848 and 1850 by T.M. Penson. They are made of rock-faced sandstone and cast iron, featuring a pair of vehicular gates, pedestrian gates on each side, and railings between the piers. The gates include a bottom rail, dogbars, a lock-rail, and alternate bars that rise through the top rail, all topped with fleur-de-lys caps. The square piers have moulded plinths and blank shields on the front and rear near the top, finished with gabled capstones. The railings beside the gates also display fleur-de-lys heads. This gateway, along with the footbridge in the cemetery, represents the only remaining complete elements of T.M. Penson's original design for the cemetery, although the picturesque layout with sandstone outcrops and generous planting is still intact. For notable tombs and cenotaphs, as well as the west chapel, refer to Overleigh Road.
