Description
The monument to Reverend Richard Knill and his wife Sarah is located south of the U Larsing Monument in Overleigh Cemetery. Erected around 1857, it is made of freestone and features a plinth with inscribed arched panels, an octagonal column, and a spire finial, standing approximately 3 meters tall.
The front of the plinth is inscribed with a tribute to Reverend Knill, detailing his birth on April 14, 1787, in Braunton, Devon, his missionary work in India for three years and in Russia for fifteen years, his advocacy for missions across Great Britain and Ireland, his six years as a pastor at Wotton-under-Edge, and his nine years as pastor of the Independent Church on Queen Street in Chester, where he died on January 2, 1857.
The left side of the monument bears the inscription, "BRETHREN THE HEATHEN ARE PERISHING." "SHALL WE LET THEM PERISH?" "GOD FORBID !" - RICHARD KNILL. The right side lists several of his published tracts, including "DYING THIEF AND DYING SAVIOUR," "THE FALSE HOPE," and "INFLUENCE OF PIOUS WOMEN," among others. The back of the monument commemorates Sarah Knill, who lived from 1796 until May 1870.
