Description

The lych gate to the Church of St. Bartholomew, dated 1904, is possibly designed by Bodley and Garner in memory of Emery Bates. It features open timber framing set on an ashlar plinth with a roof made of Kerridge stone-slate. The plinth has hollow chamfered and bead moulded coping. The entrance is a three-centred arch adorned with carved rosettes in the spandrels. On either side of the entrance are tall pierced panels, one of which has been restored while the other has been vandalised. The tiebeam displays an inscription in Medieval script, which is becoming worn, and is decorated with dentils along the top. The gable is supported by S-shaped strutting and features carved rosettes on the barge boards. Each side of the gate has four additional pierced panels, all of which have been vandalised, and inside, there are stone seats along each side.
