Description
The lych gate at the Parish Church, located 20 metres northeast of the chancel in Thorley village, dates from around 1909, as indicated by a memorial inscription. It is possibly designed by Eustace Frere. This elaborate structure features an oak timber-framed gateway set on a dressed limestone plinth, topped with a steep gabled tiled roof. The bargeboards are decorated with billet moulding and feature sinuous carvings, with a cross on a lozenge at the apex. Inside, chamfered cambered tie beams support a king post and curved struts. There are deep wooden seats on either side, enclosed in a framed and weatherboarded outshot, which includes two-light trefoil-headed wooden traceried openings in the upper part. The gate is complemented by a decorative pair of low wooden gates leading to the lane.
