Description

The Old Thatch is a house dating from the 16th century, featuring a long, one and a half storeys design with a thatched roof that has half-hipped ends, facing north. The structure is timber-framed with tension bracing and is plastered on the outside, while much of the interior remains exposed. At the rear, the thatch extends over a shallow lean-to on the eastern half of the house. The layout is a three-unit plan hall-house, with the upper end located to the east. A large red brick chimney is positioned at the upper end of the hall, accompanied by a winding stair on the front wall next to it. There is a former gable chimney at the west end, now enclosed by a one and a half storey extension that aligns with the house, which includes a modern kitchen lean-to at the west end. An extension from the 17th century is present at the eastern end, which is one step higher. The inserted floor over the hall features 18th century square joists and an unchamfered axial beam, while the floors at each end are likely older. The roof structure consists of clasped purlins. The northern front has three dormers, two of which are set on the wall plate, while one over the lower end of the original house is higher. A modern low porch with a tiled roof has been added.
