Description
The lych gate at St. Bartholomew's Church was built in 1910 in memory of Arthur Sutton Valpy, a Canon of Winchester who died on June 15, 1909, and was created by his relatives for Easter 1910. It features an oak frame set on low stone walls with a chamfered finish, topped by a steep red tile roof made from machine-made tiles, which includes an iron gable cross at the front. The structure consists of a small square, two-bay gateway with cusped arcaded sides above a panelled lower section. It has heavy chamfered corner posts and trefoil pierced knee braces supporting a cambered tie beam at each gable, along with an open screen and cusped bargeboards. There is an inscription on the tie beam facing the road. Inside, a heavy iron lantern is supported, and there is a pair of gates featuring cusping and a central pendant part, with timber benches on either side. The gate is bordered by granite set stones surrounding a rectangle of pebble pitching.
