Description

The Temple or Summer House, located to the northeast of Nell Gwynne's Monument in Park Wood, is an early 18th-century structure, likely designed by James Gibbs for William Gore as part of the landscaping scheme for Tring Park. The building features a portico with painted stonework and a stucco back wall that includes a flat dado rail. Inside, there is a plastered ceiling with a moulded cornice, and the roof is sheeted. The rear end of the structure was removed in the late 20th century for road widening.

The tetrastyle open portico, which formerly faced southwest, is designed in the Roman Ionic order, showcasing angular capitals and a triangular pediment adorned with modillions. The matching pilasters on the rear wall exhibit entasis. The temple is raised on two moulded stone steps and features the scar of a central door with a triangular pedimented doorcase. Gibbs was known for designing ornamental buildings for William Gore, who passed away in 1739.
