Description

Old Timbers is a house that originated as a 16th-century open hall house. In the 17th century, a floor was inserted in the hall along with a chimney. The front of the house was faced with brick in the 18th century, raising the eaves, and it underwent alterations and subdivision into cottages in the 19th century. It was restored as a single house in the late 20th century. The structure features a timber frame on a brick sill, which is exposed at the rear to its original height, with brick infill and a plastered sill. The front is cased in red brick, with some blue bricks incorporated. The roof is steep and covered with red tiles.

The building is long and two stories high, set well back from the road and facing south. There are four windows on the first floor and five on the ground floor, with a gabled tiled porch near the middle entrance. The first-floor windows are two-light flush casements, while the ground floor features three-light windows, both with small panes and segmental arches. A large external chimney is located on the west gable, with offsets, and there is a smaller central chimney, likely replacing a larger, older one.

The rear wall displays wide-spaced studs in four bays of timber framing, supported by straight tension braces to a mid-height rail. Inside, the house has exposed timbers, including step-jowled posts and tension braces in the framed partitions. The partition between the two-bay hall and the west bay is made of wattle and daub. The roof structure consists of a collar and queen-strut clasped purlin design with curved wind braces. The inserted floor in the hall is supported by a chamfered and hollow stopped axial beam, with chamfered and stopped joists. The west bay features squared joists and an axial beam.
