Description
Nell Gwynn's Monument is an obelisk located in Park Wood, dating from the early 18th century. It was likely commissioned by William Gore and designed by James Gibbs as part of the landscaped setting of Tring Park. The monument is constructed of limestone ashlar on a red brick core and stands about 50 feet high at a round point in the wood, overlooking Tring Park. It features a high square pedestal with a moulded cap and base, and a tall tapering obelisk that rests on a boldly moulded base, which includes two tori with scotia between. The obelisk has a concave point topped with a ball finial that is pierced by a spike. There is no inscription on the monument. From this location, there is a view to the northeast along an alley leading to the Temple or Summer House. James Gibbs was known for designing several ornamental buildings for William Gore, who died in 1739.
