Description

A two-lock staircase, dating from the late 18th century with subsequent alterations. The lock chambers are constructed of brick and stone, with stone copings. The locks feature double gates; the top and middle pairs are steel, with mechanical ground paddle gearings, while the wooden bottom gates also have mechanical paddle gearings. Concrete footbridges adjoin the middle and bottom gates. There are two sets of brick steps descending from the upper chamber and one set of stone steps descending from the lower chamber to a ramped brick towpath. Brick paving is present on the off side of the upper chamber, along with brick and concrete heel grip platforms. The locks contribute significantly to a notable group of canal buildings and are designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Ches. 99).
