Description
Delves Church of England School, formerly known as Delves Charity School, is a school building dated 1822, as indicated by the inscription on the pediment. It is constructed of red Flemish bond brick with painted ashlar dressing and has a plain tile roof. The building is single storey and features a central section with five early 19th-century bays, flanked by later 19th-century wings on either side.
The central five bays are symmetrical, with the central bay containing a doorway that originally had double doors but now has a single door set in a panelled surround. Above the door is a fanlight, and on either side are pilasters. The central bay is topped with a painted stone pediment supported by moulded brackets, which is inscribed with "THE DELVES CHARITY SCHOOL/ERECTED 1822." Each side of the central bay features two round-headed windows. The bays are separated by pilaster strips that support a plain entablature, which is decorated with projecting rectangular lugs that resemble triglyphs but are not channelled. The later wings each consist of two uneven bays, also divided by pilaster strips and supporting a similar entablature.
