Description
SMALLWOOD C.P. SCHOOL LANE SJ 86 SW 4/107 School and Schoolmaster's House - GV II
School and schoolmaster's house. c.1845. Probably by C and J Trubshaw. Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings and a fishscale roof. The churchyard front has a projecting wing at right of 2 storeys with ashlar quoins to the corners and a central 3-light window with chamfered ashlar surround. Similar 2-light window to the first floor. To left of this and slightly recessed is the single storey school building which has a central 3-light window with 2-light windows at either side, all having chamfered ashlar surrounds. To left again is a projecting gabled wing with ashlar quoins to the corners and a 5-light window to the ground floor. At left again is a later C19 and early C20 addition with a late C20 outshut with flat roof before it, above and behind which is a gabled dormer window containing 2 lights and to left of which is a window of 2 lights. The right hand side is to the schoolmaster's house and is of 2 bays with a central doorway to the ground floor with an ashlar surround and plank door. To either side of this are 2-light casement windows with chamfered ashlar surrounds. Two similar semi-dormer windows to the first floor set in gablets. Ashlar quoins to the corners and to the corner of a slightly recessed portion of walling at right. Extensive C20 addition at rear.
