Description

Smallwood House is a mid-19th century house, likely designed by C & J Trubshaw, and formerly served as a Rectory. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with blue brick diapering forming a continuous trellis of diamonds across the walls, and has ashlar dressings and a fishscale tile roof. The front of the house features projecting gabled wings on either side and a recessed central portion. A lean-to porch with square wooden piers, chamfered corners resting on ashlar bases, shelters the central four-panel doorway, which has a two-light casement window on either side with decorative metal glazing bars to the rear. A semi-dormer window of three lights with a gable above, featuring ashlar springers and coping, is positioned above the doorway. The projecting gabled wings share common features including a projecting plinth, ashlar quoins, ashlar kneelers and coping, and a string course between the ground and first floors. The right wing has a ground floor window of two lights, a chamfered ashlar sill and lintel along with two first-floor single-light windows and a similar attic window. The left wing has a central projecting chimney stack with side offsets and two flues, and a ridge chimney stack slightly left of centre. The right wing includes a four-light ground floor window and a three-light first-floor window, above which is a two-light attic window. A single-light ground floor window and matching first-floor window, both with a gablet above, are also present. A later lean-to has been added to the right. The left side of the house has a three-light window to the right and a canted bay window with a hipped roof to the left. Above are two two-light casement windows with gablets. The rear of the house features projecting wings on either end. The right wing has a four-light ground floor window and a three-light first floor window, with a slit window in the gable. The center has a four-light ground floor window, a three-light first floor window, and a gablet above. The left wing has a later outshut, a half-glazed door to the right, and two single-light windows at first-floor level. The left-hand gable includes a chimney stack with four flues.
