Description
Churche's Mansion is an important 16th-century house, with a carved inscription dated 1577, that survived the Great Fire of 1583. It is a large timber-framed black and white building with two storeys plus an attic, featuring four gables on the front and a projecting wing on the left with two gables. The building has overhangs at the first and second floors with coved plaster underhangs, and enriched corbel brackets at the eaves adorned with carved human faces and animals. The windows are mainly wood mullioned and transomed, with restored leaded lights that include some tinted glass, along with some casements likely from the 18th century. The entrance is porched, featuring a square-headed heavily moulded doorcase with an 18th-century door. There are large end and lateral brick stacks, restored barge boards, and an old tiled roof.
Inside, the left-hand wing has well-preserved exposed ceiling beams and timber framing, with the upper room at the rear showcasing some contemporary paneling and a fine carved overmantel. The principal rooms throughout the house have good panelling, including a notable carved overmantel in the room to the right of the hall. In recent years, the house has been well restored.
Churche's Mansion, along with Nos 122 to 126 (even), Nos 130 to 144 (even), Nuthurst School, and Nos 146 and 148, forms a group of significant buildings.
