Description
Nos 140 and 142 on Hospital Street are 17th century buildings with a left-hand portion and rear that date from the 18th century. They feature painted cement rendering, except for the painted brick section on the left. The buildings are two storeys plus an attic, with the upper storey projecting and having a concave under-hang. There is one sash window in the bay on the left and three 17th century small-paned leaded casements, which have radial pattern heads. The ground storey includes a pair of similar casements flanking the entrance and five sash windows. An attractive Gothic door surround, which is also repeated on the east elevation, features an ogee head and fanlight, topped by an entablature with a hood mould and enclosing two quatrefoil panels, along with a six-panelled door. There are three restored gabled dormers with 17th century leaded casements. The main facade has a parapet, while the eaves are brick elsewhere. The roof is old and tiled, hipped on the left-hand side. No 142 is adjacent at the rear. These buildings are part of a group that includes Nos 122 to 126 (even), Nos 130 to 144 (even), Nuthurst School, Nos 146 and 148, and Churche's Mansion.
