Description
A barn, dating to the late 16th century, now used as a multi-purpose farm building, stands south-east of the former Austerson Old Hall. The barn is constructed with a brick-nogged timber frame and partly weather-boarded, with a corrugated metal sheet roof. It has five truss bays and is single-storey with a loft. The timber frame exhibits fairly close studding, a single middle rail, and passing braces. The barn sits on a sandstone plinth. Full and half-heck softwood doors, mostly unpainted, provide access. Square oak loft doors are fitted with strap hinges. Softwood cladding is present, with repairs to the north end using brickwork. Internally, very heavy posts support the ends of high collar queen post trusses, which have side struts. Original wind braces fix to the purlins, ridge tree and rafters. A softwood loft floor was added later.
