Description
Bulkeley Methodist Church is a Methodist church built in 1861, as noted on a stone tablet in the gable tympanum. The church is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a slate roof. It consists of two bays and has a stone plinth. The entrance on the south gable includes a pair of two-panel doors set in a recessed doorcase, topped with a stained glass radial bar fanlight. The gable facade and side elevations are adorned with tall, narrow sash windows that have glazing bars and semi-circular heads. The door and windows in the facade are framed by moulded stone heads with imposts and keystones. A wooden pediment, supported by consoles at the eaves, apex, and raking cornice, is finished with a slender stone band. The tympanum of the pediment features a stone tablet inscribed with "Jubilee Primitive Methodist Chapel" along with the date.
Inside, the church has a reredos designed as an arcade of three semi-circular arches with fluted pilasters and imposts. Above this is a recessed gallery opening with turned balusters and a moulded handrail. The space above the rail is filled with a pair of horizontally sliding shutters, each with four ogee-headed panels. The opening is flanked by wide linings with inward-facing consoles at the head and a moulded cast iron column at the center. The pine hexagonal pulpit is flanked by three ogee-headed panels on each side, featuring tall end-posts with lamp standards. The Communion Rail, made of turned balusters, is angled back at 45 degrees to meet these posts. The walls are lined with panelled wainscoting, and there are pitch pine benches. The side walls have single marble memorials set in coursed stucco. A small wood panelled internal porch with four-panel doors is located on both sides. The ceiling is adorned with a plaster cornice and a large ornate ceiling rose. This church is a well-preserved and attractive example of a small chapel from its period.
