Description

Bulkeley Hall is a mansion dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of brown brick with an old slate hipped roof and has three storeys. The building is seven bays wide, and a rear service wing to the northwest completes an "L" shaped plan. A stone plinth, rusticated quoins, and sill bands mark the first and second floors. The main entrance features a pair of fully glazed double doors, approached by four steps and set within a deeply recessed opening flanked by reeded wooden columns with a fluted frieze and a radial bar fanlight. Recessed sash windows with glazing bars, stone sills, and stone skewback heads are present throughout. A bracketed wooden cornice, projecting gable stacks, lead hips, and a sandstone ridge are prominent features. Some built-up window openings are visible at the rear of the building.

The interior retains substantial 18th-century joinery and plasterwork. Original panelled window shutters remain, alongside six-panel doors with wide beaded architraves and rosettes in the angles. Plaster cornices, in an anthemion form, adorn all main ground and first-floor rooms. A single floor of small, square sandstone slabs is laid diagonally. The ceilings of the Dining and Reception Rooms are panelled by beams incorporating the anthemion cornices. Marble mantels are found in two ground floor rooms. A central room is divided into two sections by a large segmental arch, panelled in plaster, while a large plastered recess with a semicircular head is present in the Dining Room. The staircase is geometrically designed, featuring moulded balusters, a cut and bracketed string, and a polished hardwood handrail. Bevelled beams, potentially from an earlier building, are visible at both ground and first floor levels.
