Description
This is a canal accommodation bridge, known as Bridge Number 70, built around 1827 and designed by engineer William Crosley. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, some of which feature fine tooling. The bridge has an elliptical or horseshoe arch made of voussoirs, with a projecting keystone that rises to a chamfered band below the parapet. The battered walls on either side of the arch end in squared piers, and the top is finished with chamfered coping. This bridge is part of a series of notable bridges and mileposts along the Macclesfield Canal.
