Description
The canal fence posts, dating from around 1840, are situated alongside the Macclesfield Canal. They are made of local sandstone and consist of roughly-hewn, tapered slabs. There are 38 visible posts, each approximately 1 to 1.5 metres high, with two railing slots pierced through each one. While a few posts show damage at the top, most remain intact. The posts are evenly spaced along the towpath on the north-west side of the canal, although some posts in the line are missing. The canal runs on a high embankment over Dane-in-Shaw Brook, opposite the Dane-in-Shaw railway viaduct.
