Description

School Cottages is a former reformatory school and farm built in 1855, as indicated by a datestone. The building is constructed of brown brick with a dark clay tile roof to the front and grey slate to the rear. It is two storeys high, with a symmetrical front facade featuring three windows. A camber-arched entry has been converted into a doorway, with a two-light small-pane window positioned above. Each side of the doorway has a three-light small-pane casement window to each floor. The building surrounds a rectangular courtyard; a rear wing features three camber-arched openings onto it. The front, left, and right ranges were subsequently converted into cottages. Cast-iron lattice casements are present in the left side of the courtyard. Two ridge chimneys are situated on both the front and side wings. The interior was not fully inspected, and no features of special interest were noted. The school was founded in 1855 by G W Latham, funded by subscriptions from local landowners and costing £255. It included 40 acres of farmland and was staffed by a superintendent and four masters, accommodating 60 boys who received instruction in farm work, along with three hours of schoolwork daily and household duties.
