Description

Nos. 170, 171, and 173 High Street West are two houses with later shops, dating from the late 18th century, with late 19th-century shop fronts. No. 173, located on the right, was refronted in the late 19th century and had its top storey rebuilt around 1980. No. 172 is incorporated into No. 173. The left buildings, Nos. 170 and 171, are constructed of painted brick with painted ashlar dressings, while No. 173 features bright brick with ashlar dressings and a cast-iron shop window on the first floor. All three buildings are three storeys high with three windows each. The left building has a projecting ground floor shop front that is boarded below the cornice, and the upper floors have 4-pane sash windows in architraves, with smaller windows on the top floor that include a sill string. The right building has a boarded ground floor shop and a projecting showroom window on the first floor, featuring wide central and curved corner sheets of glass set in slender cast-iron pilasters, topped with a cornice and entablature that includes brackets and mullions. The renewed second-floor windows have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills.
