Bonded Warehouse Premises Of Thomas Maughan (Rose Line) At Nz 4017 5734

The bonded warehouse premises of Thomas Maughan, known as Rose Line, date from the mid-19th century and are located on Low Street in Sunderland. The building is constructed of garden wall bond brick, featuring five and one bond patterns, with ashlar impost blocks and a coated Welsh slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has six bays.

In the fourth bay, there are double doors on the ground floor and a loading bay above, both set under deep segmental brick arches supported by impost blocks. The lower doors are fitted with long band hinges, while the upper doors are recessed. To the right of the door on the ground floor, there is a segmental-headed opening with iron bars set in a sloping sill, and small square ventilator openings are positioned to the left and right. On the first floor, five small openings with deep segmental brick arches are filled with grids of flat iron bars. The building features a corbelled eaves gutter and three rainwater pipes that are recessed into the brickwork. This warehouse is a rare survivor from the period of intensive warehousing that once characterized the area.
