Description
Custom House, built around 1900, is an impressive structure made of ashlar stone with a pink granite door surround. The roof is covered with graduated Lakeland slate and features stone gable copings. The building has two storeys and an attic, with three windows across its front.
The entrance on the left is a set-back bay that includes a six-panelled double door framed by a granite architrave. Above the door is a panelled frieze with a cornice supported by scroll brackets, and the painted carved Royal Arms are displayed prominently above. To the right, there is a gabled projection with a slightly protruding central panel that features a wide ground floor window with mullions and transoms, set within a keyed round-arched rusticated architrave.
First-floor windows have string courses at their level and sills, with two-light mullion and transom windows paired in the gabled projection, framed by Tuscan pilasters. The eaves have a gutter cornice. In the oriel of the pedimented gable, similar paired windows are supported by scroll brackets on pilasters, with an entablature and cornice above. The gable copings feature pediments at both the base and the cornice of the attic windows, with the lower being segmental and the upper having tall moulded finials.
The steeply-pitched roof includes a tall pedimented dormer with a four-pane sash window above the entrance bay, and tall paired ashlar chimneys rise from the parapet of the right return, which has a gabled second bay that is simpler in style compared to the front gable.
