Description
Newport Magistrates Court is a building constructed in the late 17th century, made of grey ashlar sandstone. It features a broad hipped slate roof with deep dentilled eaves and tall ashlar chimney stacks at each end of the ridge. The entrance facade, facing east, is symmetrical with seven bays and two storeys, while the central entrance bay rises to three storeys, projecting forward and topped with a gable. It has 12-pane sash windows with cut voussoirs and projecting keystones, along with a stringcourse above the ground floor windows. The entrance bay includes four-light stone mullioned windows on the upper floors with small pane glazing and a carved crest on the gable. The round-arched doorway is flanked by thin pilasters and has a cornice, with convex jambs featuring raised bands. Above the door, there is a large carved stone heraldic shield set within a square frame. The building also has large iron rainwater heads dated 1906. Each side of the central gable has a three-light dormer with a flat roof. The north elevation has seven bays with similar sash windows and three dormers, while the south elevation has six bays with matching sash windows and dormers.
Inside, there is a large dogleg stair located at the rear of the central hall, featuring a thick ramped handrail, panelled balustrades, and wainscot. The stair window is leaded and includes some armorial glass. The ground floor consists of plain rooms.
