Description
This building, located on High Street West in Sunderland, was constructed in 1856 as offices for the Registrar and Poor Law Guardians. Designed by Thomas Moore, it features a Gothic style with ashlar stonework and a Welsh slate roof. The structure has three storeys in the central section and two storeys on the flanking sections, with a total of four windows in the central part and three in each of the sides. The ground floor has been altered to accommodate 20th-century shops.
The central gabled section showcases three lancet windows beneath a drip string, with a central crocketed ogee and pierced quatrefoils on either side of the finial. The pilasters that define the gable are adorned with cusped panels and rise to octagonal pinnacles and spirelets topped with Tudor-flower finials. The gable itself features a pierced panelled parapet with additional spirelets and finials. The flanking sections have label moulds and splayed reveals for the sash windows, some of which have been renewed. The four right bays retain original fine glazing bars in most windows, although one wide 20th-century window has been inserted. A moulded gutter cornice completes the design.
