Description

This building on High Street East in Sunderland is a house, later used as a shop, dating to around 1840, with alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone, with a pantiled roof and brick chimneys; a later addition on the left return is of brick. The building is three storeys high and originally had two windows. The ground-floor shop front has corrugated iron covering the central window, flanked by doors, the left of which has been blocked with iron. The stall risers have been replaced with white tile. Pilasters support an entablature featuring a pulvinated frieze and long, carved wooden and stucco brackets to the cornice; the original cresting is missing. The upper floors feature paired narrow sash windows in lugged architraves, with the first-floor windows having a frieze and cornice, and the second-floor windows being smaller and resting on a wave-moulded sill string. The top entablature has a modillioned cornice. The roof has ridge end chimneys.
