Description

This is a bonded warehouse located on Wylam Wharf, the premises of Rose Line Limited, built in the 18th century and around 1830. The northern section is constructed from rubble stone, while the southern section is made of brick, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building stands four storeys high and has a layout of four by five bays.

On the eastern elevation, the five-bay stone section features a central ground floor metal loading bay door that is recessed within a rendered surround. The loading doors above on the first floor are blocked, while those on the upper floors are boarded. These are situated beneath a gabled boarded hoist opening with a projecting pulley. The small segment-headed openings have projecting sills and rubble heads; some are blocked with bricks, others are boarded, and some have glazing bars.

The four-bay brick section to the left has narrow loading doors in the second bay and wider doors on the ground floor beneath a renewed lintel, with segmental brick arches above the other openings. Similar arches are present over small wooden mullion two-light openings, some of which are boarded, all featuring projecting stone sills. The roof is hipped on the left side and has a stone-coped gable on the right return, which covers wide boarded loading doors on each floor and a small hoist opening in a larger brick-blocked opening at the gable peak.

This warehouse is one of only two remaining in what was once a densely occupied commercial quayside area. At the time of the survey, the building was empty and in a state of dereliction.
