Description
The Old Wool Market is a Grade II listed warehouse built from rubble stone, featuring a slate close-eaved roof. This long building has two storeys and a loft, with six bays on each side. The eastern end facing the quay has modern bargeboards and a large round-arched former entry that is now glazed, framed by stone voussoirs. There is a first-floor loading door, also glazed, with a concrete head beneath the sill of the loft loading door, which has a timber lintel. Each side of the first-floor door has a window with brick heads and stone keystones. The windows are part-louvred over four-pane casements.
On the southern side, there are six first-floor paired casement windows with cemented brick heads, while the ground floor features two broad-arched former entries alternated with two large square-headed entries, which are cemented around and fitted with modern glazing. The left arch has recessed rubble stone blocking, while the right arch has flush rubble blocking that shows some age, along with an inset blocked door with stone voussoirs. To the right of the first-floor windows is a stone plaque that reads: "This Quay was rebuilt at the expense of this Corpn in the MAYORALTY of Wm Moore Esq 1777," signed below by '? Argust'.
The gable end facing Quay Street has modern bargeboards and stone steps leading up to the left, providing access to an adjoining warehouse and a first-floor side door. The loft door in the gable has a brick head, and the first-floor door, which has been altered with one side in brick, is flanked by windows with brick heads. The ground floor features a large arched entry with stone voussoirs, and there is modern glazing in the openings. The rear northern wall has four upper windows, all with brick heads. The interior has been altered for use as offices.
