Description

The Candle Stores is a three-storey warehouse built from rubble stone, topped with a slate close-eaved roof that has half-hipped ends. The building features three bays with renewed casement pair windows, which have stone voussoirs above their cambered heads and slate sills. The elevation facing the quay includes three evenly spaced top windows, three longer first-floor windows (with the right one positioned further to the right than the one above), and a broad cambered-headed former entry on the ground floor. This entry has bicolour voussoirs and is now fitted with 20th-century glazed doors and sidelights. The south end of the building has a first-floor door that is accessed by a long flight of stone steps across the gable front of the Old Wool Market, and there is a large loft window above it with a timber lintel.

The front facing Quay Street is also three-storey and three-bay, featuring renewed windows with cambered heads and stone voussoirs flanking a longer former loading door in the center. The ground floor has a wide cambered opening in the center with stone voussoirs, flanked by similar cambered-headed openings on each side. These side openings have cast concrete curved heads that replaced flat heads since 1974. The glazing is modern. The interior has not been inspected.
