Description

The Post Office is a building constructed from Bath stone ashlar, featuring a slate hipped roof and a large painted timber lantern on top. The roof is set back with a concealed gutter positioned above the cornice. The square lantern has arched latticed openings on each side, complete with impost and key blocks, and is topped with an entablature that includes a cornice and a blocking course beneath a steep concave-sided copper pyramid roof with a vane. There is a tall, thin ashlar chimney at the rear left corner, which has a cornice.

The building is two-storey with a five-bay front, showcasing a moulded plinth and an ashlar moulded dentil cornice. The sash windows have thick glazing bars, with 16 panes on the first floor and large 30-pane windows on the ground floor, all featuring ashlar sills. The central entrance consists of double panelled doors with brass fittings, framed by a finely carved doorcase with a pediment, supported by attached Roman Doric columns. The entablature includes blocks with triglyphs and carries an open pediment with flat mutules above finely-carved royal arms. The cornice extends around the two end walls, above three 12-pane first floor sashes, and includes a downpipe with an ornamental hopper-head.

There are single-storey wings on both the left and right sides, each with a parapet and moulded coping, as well as an unmoulded plinth. The left wing features three 16-pane sashes, while the right wing has a single arched window with a triple keystone, with the jambs extending down to the plinth, and three similar windows on the south end wall. The parapet on the south wing is subtly stepped back beneath the moulded coping. The rear wall is pebbledashed, and behind it is a lower sorting room, also pebbledashed, with a hipped slate roof and a hipped glazed lantern.

The interior of the building has been altered.
