Description
This is a former pair of terraced houses, now a bank, dating to the 18th century. It is constructed of painted stucco with slate mansard roofs concealed behind a parapet, and features large red brick corniced ridge stacks. The building is three storeys high and originally comprised four bays, with a narrow entrance bay to the right of each house. The right pilaster of the entrance bay survives in the second bay, but was removed in the fourth bay. The left end pilaster is actually the right pilaster of the entrance bay of the adjacent property. Pilasters have moulded caps and bases above the ground floor, originally continuing down to the ground level. An entablature sits above, featuring a deep frieze and cornice that projects forward over the second bay and the left pilaster, as well as the broad pilaster in the fourth bay. The cornice and frieze were slightly enriched in 1893. Dormers, also dating to 1893, break the low parapet, each containing paired sash windows with scrolled sides and stucco coped gables. The windows are sash windows with narrow marginal panes; the windows in the two entrance bays, and above the main bank entrance in the second bay, have been shortened to accommodate the curved pediment below. The 1893 work also included moulded, shouldered surrounds to the upper windows, and a broad band between the upper floors, consisting of a moulded sill course and a moulded entablature above the first floor, with the cornice broken forward over each window. Raised apron panels connect the windows vertically.
The ground floor was entirely re-modelled in 1893, retaining two arched entries. Channelled rustication with a moulded cornice projects forward over the left pier, the main entry in the narrow second bay, and the thick pier between the third and fourth bays. The left three bays are near symmetrical about the main door, with the fourth bay separate, providing access to the upper floors. The main part has three windows to each side of the main entry, a broad central window, and narrower side windows, all featuring late 19th-century sash windows with plate glass and marginal bars to the upper sashes. The window surrounds have square heads with radiating voussoirs and raised keystones; the centre left window is wider than the centre right one. A moulded plinth runs along the base. The main entry is flanked by channelled piers, a moulded impost band and a pair of consoles supporting an entablature with a cornice and a curved pediment. These piers and consoles frame a square-headed recess with a moulded arched doorway, featuring wrought iron tracery in front of a plain fanlight, and an impost band extending across above a panelled door. The fourth bay, on the right, has a rusticated surround with moulded caps and a vermiculated keystone to a recessed arch framing a doorway with a moulded impost course under a similar fanlight. There are 20th-century panelled doors with glass panels.
The ground floor was substantially altered in the late 20th century. Within the right-hand door, an original staircase remains, the lowest flight of which was altered in 1893 with lyre-shaped cast-iron balusters and ornate iron newel posts. The upper flights feature a continuous rail, square balusters and scrolled tread ends.
