Description

Nos. 1 and 3 Victoria Place is an end-terrace former pair of houses that have been converted into commercial premises. The building is constructed of painted stucco and features slate mansard roofs behind a parapet, with red brick stacks at the ends and ridges. It stands three storeys tall and has a three-bay main front, with a fourth bay that is canted on the corner of Quay Street, as well as three additional bays facing Quay Street.

The façade is framed by giant pilasters that accentuate the narrow central bay, which was the former entrance bay of No. 3, and these pilasters have simple stepped caps. Above this, there is an entablature with a deep frieze and a simple cornice that projects forward over the central bay, with a blocking course above. A similar pilaster is located on the left end, framing the entrance bay to No. 5. On the right side, a broader giant pilaster rises through the frieze to the cornice, which also breaks forward over it. The frieze reappears over the canted bay, which was the former entrance to No. 1, and is mirrored on the right side of the Quay Street front.

The windows are sash types with narrow marginal panes, with the two entrance bays having narrower windows and the first-floor windows being longer than those above. The ground floor has been altered for commercial use. The arched entry to No. 3 still exists, featuring marginal glazing in a radiating bar fanlight and a modern half-glazed door. There are large square shop windows on either side, with marginal glazing bars in the top lights and black marble below the sills. The entrance in the canted bay has a similar design, with a recessed half-glazed door and canted shop windows.

On the Quay Street front, there are two modern shop windows, with the left one interrupting the bottom of the left pilaster that framed a former entrance bay. The upper floors on the left side are blank, situated between the left pilaster and the pair that frame the narrow bay, which has a square six-pane sash window above a long narrow sash. The third bay features two six-pane sashes on the top floor and one long sash on the first floor to the left. The ground floor has been altered.
