Description

Sunderland Exchange, later known as Missions to Seamen, was built between 1812 and 1814 by Stokoe of Newcastle, with George Cameron of Esk as the builder. The building features incised stucco and is designed in a classical style. It has two storeys and a façade with a 2:5:2 window arrangement, where the outer pairs of windows project slightly under pediments. The ground floor has round-headed doorways located in the right end bay of the centre and recessed in the end arches of the arcade, which includes an impost string. There is a first-floor band below the sash windows, most of which had broken glass at the time of the survey, set in plain reveals. The building is topped with a simple entablature and a cornice that rises to form pediments, with a blocking course that abuts and continues outside these features.
