Description

These are two houses, now shops, built around 1780, with a shop front added in the late 19th century. The building is located on High Street East in Sunderland, and includes the rear buildings at Nos. 2 and 3 Union Lane. The construction is primarily brick, with ashlar stone detailing including quoins. The roof is covered in Welsh slate. The building is three storeys high and has two windows facing the street. The ground floor has a renewed shop front with two doors, distinguished by tooled ashlar quoins. The windows on the upper floors have four panes and stone sills. The return wall to Union Lane features a stone plaque displaying the street name. This side of the building is three storeys high with 4 windows. There are doors on the left and another door under a cambered brick arch, to the left of the third bay. The windows are set in flush box frames; the window on the left has glazing bars and the second has four panes. The right-hand windows are replacements, and a blocked ground-floor opening features a cambered brick arch. The rear of the building was derelict when surveyed.
