Description

The retaining wall located on the east side of the former graveyard of the Church of St Peter is a notable structure, likely with medieval foundations and primarily constructed in the 18th century, with some modifications made in the 19th century. The wall is made from rubble limestone and sandstone, with some granite, and features old brick patching and rubble coping. It stands between 2.5 to 3 meters high and ramps up on the left side, where there is an opening that leads to the vicarage garden. Near this entrance, which is accompanied by late 20th-century brick-arched steps, an 18th-century headstone has been set into the wall, and additional headstones are leaning against it. The lowest section of the wall consists of a mix of limestone and sandstone, with some red sandstone present; the central section is primarily sandstone with brick patching, while the upper part is limestone with brick patching and rounded rubble coping. An inscribed ashlar block from 1848 is incorporated about one-third of the way from the north end of the wall, and there is a visible space indicating that another block has been removed.
