Ryhope Grange Farmhouse Including Barn Adjacent To West

Ryhope Grange Farmhouse, including the barn adjacent to the west, dates from the late 18th century and is now a house. The former farmhouse is constructed of rubble limestone with irregular quoins, along with ashlar and brick dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof featuring brick chimneys. It is two storeys high with three windows. The central door has been renewed and is set beneath a painted flat lintel with a gabled hood of the same period. The ground floor sashes have renewed openings with header bricks laid on edge forming their lintels and applied glazing bars. The first floor sashes have flat stone lintels and possibly renewed projecting sills. The roof has chimneys at both ends. The adjacent barn, also made of rubble limestone with irregular quoins and a Welsh slate roof, was formerly described as two storeys and four bays, with openings high in the wall. It was inaccessible at the time of the survey, and no openings were visible in the wall, although six protruding lights have been inserted in the renewed roof. The buildings are retained for their group value.
