Description
No. 1 Howard Street is a subscription library built between 1806 and 1807 for the Tynemouth Literary and Philosophical Society, and it is now used as offices. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a roll-moulded plinth and features a rusticated ground floor. The sides and rear are made of brick, and it has a Welsh slate roof with flat stone gable coping and end brick chimneys.
It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with a layout of one central bay flanked by three bays on each side. The central section is topped with a pediment. The entrance features a central six-panelled door set within a pedimented Tuscan doorcase, which includes a fluted frieze, pilasters, and an entablature that matches the style of the flanking windows. Above the entrance is a tall Venetian window in the Ionic Order, flanked by roundels in the pediment. The ground floor has two sash windows in the end bays with voussoirs, and a single window with a plain stone lintel above. All first-floor sash windows have margin lights and sill bands. The left return gable features similar sashes and a large roundel at the gable peak, which formerly contained a clock. This information was noted in the Newcastle Chronicle on 7th November 1807.
