Description
No. 105 Howard Street is a bank, now a shop, built in 1882 by F.R.N. Haswell for Hodgkin, Barnett, Pease, Spence and Co. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a plinth and features a Welsh slate roof, designed in the Italianate style. The building has three storeys and five bays. The ground floor is banded and includes late 19th-century entrances in the outer bays; the left entrance is set in a recessed panel with a small window in a broken segmental pediment, while the right entrance is framed by a moulded elliptical-headed surround with a pedimented carved keystone. There are three sash windows between these entrances. The upper floors are adorned with a giant Corinthian Order. The first-floor windows are alternately pedimented, with the outer ones featuring lugged surrounds, and all windows have architraves with upper glazing bars. A cill band runs along the first floor, topped by an entablature and blocking course. The roof is hipped, with corniced ashlar chimneys that rest on bracketed splayed bases.
