Description
No. 97 Howard Street is a house that has been converted into two shops. It was built around 1780 and features early 20th century and late 20th century shop fronts. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof with stone gable copings. It stands three storeys high and has three bays, with two additional bays on the left side facing Saville Street. The entrance to the house is located at the left of the second bay.
The older shop has a corner window made of curved glass and a bracketed fascia. The first-floor center window is round-headed and flanked by pilasters, with a keystone above it. The other first-floor windows have wedge lintels with false keystones, while the second-floor windows feature plain wedge lintels. The glazing is varied, mostly consisting of sash windows, with two windows that have glazing bars. There is a cill band on the second floor and an eaves gutter board. The roof is hipped with brick chimneys at each end.
